Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz that gets its color from irradiation and inclusions of iron in the crystal lattice. Amethyst has been prized for thousands of years as a gemstone, commonly being used in jewelry. Ancient Greeks believed that amethyst prevented the intoxicating effects of alcohol. Amethyst was considered a precious gem until the 18th century when large deposits were discovered in South America. Its Mohs hardness is 7. These pieces are polished into an obelisk shape.
