Iridescent Ammonite - A

Ammonites were ocean-dwelling mollusks that lived from the mid-Devonian (388 million years ago) through the Cretaceous (66 million years ago).  The iridescence is caused by the unique crystal structure in the layers of aragonite that make up the shell and how it reflects light. 

This ammonite is from Madagascar of the genus Cleoniceras.
