A Petoskey stone is a rock and a fossil that is often pebble-shaped and composed of a fossilized rugose coral, Hexagonaria percarinata. These coral colonies lived in a shallow sea that covered what is now the Great Lakes area during Devonian time, about 350 million years ago. These pieces are polished and carved into a shape of Michigan.
